Discovery and Solutions
Just a decade after our founding, Columbia’s Zuckerman Institute has built a powerful engine of neuroscience discovery.
We want to decipher mind and brain, with the aim of understanding behavior: how we learn, move, grow, remember, make decisions and sense the world. To that end, our researchers are dedicated to foundational science and unlocking the fundamental principles of the brain.
The questions we ask—and the answers we find—speak to some of society’s most urgent challenges: from improving the quality of life for the young and old through research into neurodegenerative diseases, to understanding and combating obesity and malnutrition by decoding taste, addressing addiction by elucidating the mechanisms of pain, navigating the complexities of AI by creating computational models and transforming educational systems by studying learning and memory.
Our 450,000-square-foot research hub at Columbia University sits in the heart of New York City and is purpose-built to drive discovery. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and facilities, our 50+ labs and 800+ researchers are propelling us into our next decade of exciting progress.
Our work builds upon the foundation laid by Nobel laureates Eric Kandel and Richard Axel, along with founding co-director Thomas Jessell, and furthered by the visionary leadership of Rui Costa. Together, we have assembled a world-class, interdisciplinary community of neuroscientists, statisticians, engineers, psychologists and scholars from across fields. We are united by a dual commitment to uncovering the mysteries of mind and brain and educating the next generation of neuroscientists.
I invite you to learn more about our science and the people leading breakthroughs at the Zuckerman Institute. For every scientist and discovery featured here, there are many more to explore.
Our mission is ambitious, and the opportunities are vast, as we work together to understand how mind and brain shape behavior. With our second decade holding tremendous promise for impact well beyond our walls, it is a pleasure to share with you a glimpse into the vibrant world within them. Welcome.
